My Positive POV: Moving from Season 6 to Season 7

Okay... I'm back with a more positive outlook. :)

Stephan Nathan isn't the best at interviews, but some of his answers in interviews following the finale seem to be helpful. After each section's interview answers, I'll give my point of view.

BOOTH & BRENNAN
Are they a c
ouple?

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY:

I just spent five minutes yelling “WHAT?” at my TV — in a good way.
I can’t believe Brennan is pregnant. Some fans are worried that because Angela used the word “dream” in conversation with Brennan, Brennan’s conversation with Booth was just a dream. But she really is pregnant, correct?
Absolutely. This is not a dream.

What was the time jump between Nigel-Murray’s death last week and this week when she told Booth that she was pregnant?
It’s probably at least a month.

Did they sleep together just that once, or have they been sleeping together since that night?
I think that’s up to every viewer. I have my little feeling about it, but I don’t want to impose my opinion on that on anyone.

After last week’s episode aired, some fans felt cheated that if there was a real love scene, we didn’t get to see it. Will we ever get to see that moment, or will we just move forward?
Well, we’ll now see them as a couple — whatever a couple means to Booth and Brennan. [Laughs] It will be that unique couple. It won’t be what you expect.

TVLINE

First, please assure me that this isn’t going to be some kind of bait and switch. Brennan is
really carrying Booth’s child, right?
It was not a dream. There is no alternate reality. What you see is what you get. They are having a baby. She is pregnant with his child. She [slept with] him in the previous episode and this was the outcome.

So this isn’t just two co-workers having a baby together after a one-night stand. This is a full-fledged couple starting a family?
They are as much of a full-fledged couple as two unique and difficult people can be. Brennan is not a fan of marriage. Booth is somebody who’s always wanted to get married. These issues still remain. The tension that has existed in their relationship up to this point will continue. They’re now sharing something and they’re committed to each other in a way they always wanted and there’s no way to avoid that. They have to deal with the reality that they’ve gotten what they secretly wished for.

This is a very unconventional path to take. I mean, these two haven’t been on a real date together and now they’re having a baby.
The reality is, Booth has been with Brennan more than he ever was with [a real girlfriend like] Hannah. Which is always the case when people work together in a high-pressure job. [By making Brennan pregnant] we avoid all of the [trappings] that people commonly associate with the Moonlighting curse, which is, “Oh, now they have to date,” or “Oh, now they have to hug each other and kiss and share desserts.” They never have to share dessert. [Laughs]

My take on this...

Comfort Sex: I'm okay with it only because they have loved each other for so long (even if Brennan didn't realize it). I would like to believe it was more than sex. They made love. What is the evidence? At the end of Hole in the Hart (HitH), Brennan went to him and put her arm through his. Booth didn't smile right away. When he did smile, to me it looked like he realized that she wasn't going to panic or run. He knew that they were okay. He knew they were a couple.

The Change in the Game (TCitG) didn't show the affection I was expecting. However, they were very comfortable around each other. The way Booth looked at her when he told her she could be his girlfriend, to me, it looked as if that was a given because she already was his girlfriend. They didn't have to make that part up. I was surprised it was changed to engaged. With both of those situations, Brennan was not balking at the idea.

I think they probably continued progressing in the new level of their relationship between episodes. If they didn't, whatever the reason, I think they would have acted awkwardly around each other. Why did they walk so far apart from each other at the end of the finale? Well, I think that was Brennan's unspoken choice. Throughout the episode, she was testing Booth's reaction about babies and kids. She was nervous about how he would react. Of course, Booth wanted another child, but he was once again doing it without a marriage. The smile on his face once it sunk in was priceless. What shocked me was Brennan's smile. They are happy.

Are they a couple? In my opinion, yes. They are a couple.

BOOTH & BRENNAN
What will happen in season 7?

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY:

Would this be happening now in the sto
ry if Emily Deschanel hadn’t become pregnant in real life?

Yes. This was something that we had been discussing even before Emily found out she was pregnant. It’s very difficult to find a way to deal with two characters who everybody knows should be together without embracing what everybody calls the Moonlighting curse. We had to find a way to keep the integrity of those characters intact, and yet move them along because you can only wait so long. So we wanted to avoid that part of the relationship where you first get together and the fresh glow of love, and you’re sharing dessert, and you’re overly polite. We didn’t want to do that. Booth and Brennan have disagreed about fundamentally everything — except each other — for six years. That will continue. Their characters will remain the same: Booth and Brennan will have completely different ways of dealing with the pregnancy, completely different ways of dealing with where their life goes from here. Booth is the marrying kind as we know, and Brennan is not. Where are they gonna live? How are they gonna raise the child? How are they gonna continue to catch murderers together when they have a baby hanging around? So all of these issues will be dealt with in the way that they’re always dealt with — from opposite sides. The ultimate pragmatist meets this romantic who has faith that everything will be worked out as long as you look at it the right way. These are issues that won’t die. We hopefully have found a way to continue what everyone loves about Bones while really kicking it up a notch and adding a whole new set of complications now that these two people actually find themselves together.

Do you anticipate a time jump when the show returns in the fall?
It’s not gonna be two weeks later. We’ll see them a little bit further along. Exactly how far along remains to be seen. We’re working that out now.

What would you like to say to fans who are weary of the show bringing a baby into the Booth and Brennan dynamic?
It’s not like Alf has come into their lives, it’s something real. We want that to affect the show, but it’s not gonna be a show about having babies. It’s not Parenthood. I’m sure there are gonna be some viewers who are upset. “Oh, the baby’s gonna do this and do that.” A lot of viewers always make up their mind on how we’re gonna ruin the show before it happens. [Laughs] And hopefully we will disappoint those viewers. And the viewers who have faith that we’ll be able to take the show into new territory well, we hope we won’t disappoint them. We’re very, very excited about being able to do the show that we love doing, but do it with fresh eyes

TVLINE

What impact did Emily’s pregnancy have on this story? Would you have gone this route regardless?
Emily being pregnant certainly figured into it to a certain extent. But [series creator] Hart [Hanson] and I were leaning toward this independently of that. The biggest problem we faced going into Season 7 was how to get these two people together while keeping the integrity of Brennan and Booth’s characters in tact. By going this route, we didn’t have to have them go through the traditional love-dovey stage where everything was wonderful and they understood each other and they got past their differences. That’s never going to be the case. They now are together but are essentially the same exact characters. They’re going to disagree on everything they disagreed about before, including how to approach their lives together, religion, family and now how to approach having a child. So we lose nothing but gain a huge amount with the reality that they are now together sharing the biggest thing in their lives.

Will they move in together?

That will be addressed in Season 7. When we open in Season 7, it’s not Ozzie and Harriet. It’s not a perfect little domestic family situation. They haven’t figured out where they’re living, how they’re living and what their future is. They just know that they’re together.

How much time will have passed?
That’s something we’re still deciding. We will probably pick up a couple of months down the line.

My take on this...

B&B do everything backwards. So have a baby already? Why not? They've known each other for 6 years. They know each others pasts, faults, and beliefs. They know they will have to work to maintain their relationship. And most importantly, neither one of them wants to fail and lose the other.

I think the bickering and bantering will continue centered around their life-styles and raising a child together. I believe they will remain a couple and not just raise the child as friends and partners. I don't see either of them "running away." The baby bonds them. This is B&B. I know this kind of foundation doesn't work with a lot of people in the real world, but B&B are unique. They're the center and the center must hold.

Will we see more physical affection? I sure hope so. Watching old episodes from seasons 1-5 can be sad sometimes. They touched each other a lot. We haven't seen this in so long. I think we need it and deserve it. B&B need it and deserve it. I'm not asking for a sex scene, but I wouldn't complain if we saw something like in the coma dream. I don't mind if they keep what's theirs to themselves. I just want to see the chemistry return.

Initial Reactions

Wow! The finale was a shocker! Most likely you were shocked, too.

These are my initial reactions only: after watching the episode twice and reading two interviews done with executive producer, SN. One is on TV/line and the other is on Give Me My Remote. The second interview (GMMR) was crude and insulting and didn't add any warm fuzzies to my sad viewpoint.

**********************************************

Why should we believe that B&B have a relationship? I have seen no obvious signs of it since before the 100th. It seemed like it was SLOWLY getting back to normal after the blizzard episode, but it never developed. Instead we got an imagined sex scene which was confirmed to be just that... only sex. Before the finale, I believed that they had made love and I was okay that I didn't see it. But the finale proved that it had nothing to do with love. It was only sex. Brennan had to actually tell Booth that he was the father. Very insulting. There was affection at the end of Hole in the Heart. I personally saw none of that in the finale. B&B had to be told to show affection when we got to see a kiss on the cheek. Booth still walks next to Brennan with enough space for the Holy Spirit unless Bren links arms. What happened to Booth's hand at the small of her back? If I had seen that, just that, I could believe they were in a relationship that was moving forward with trust and love.

Not only have we had to endure Booth and Hannah talking about their sex life, we've had to see PDA and a few times going to bed or finishing up in bed together. One episode started with them in bed... makes me want to puke. We've seen Booth in bed after sex with Cam and Rebecca, too. And we don't even get a real kiss between B&B. Where is the relationship HH and SN want us to believe exists? And I'm tired of reading and hearing that they've had a relationship for 6 years. Huh? Booth wanted nothing to do with Brennan for over half of the season. The Hannah arc ruined everything for a believable B&B relationship. It could have worked, but HH and SN failed to deliver a believable story this season.

Before the finale, I was considering buying season 6 on DVD and just not watching the first 10 episodes ever again, but the finale made everything in the season's 2nd half a huge mockery.

It seems like everything before season 6 was a lie. Crappy sex vs making love... making love doesn't seem to exist for Booth anymore or on the show in general. Season 4: Booth didn't want a baby with Bones unless they had a committed relationship. We can say anything to each other... right Bones? (Season 5 Bond in the Boot). Of course we know that wasn't completely true with feelings. But now, in the Pinocccio episode, we hear Booth make a toast to things unsaid. Seriously?

I do believe that Brennan being pregnant will create some fun bickering and bantering but only if they're in a committed relationship. If they are only friends and partners after a one night stand, then it will be bickering out of annoyance from Booth like when he was with Hannah. That is not funny and it is not entertaining. After reading two interviews with SN, I'm concerned about B&B, but if they are careful, they can fix things. They won't ever be able to cover-up all the mistakes in season 6, but I'm hoping that good can come from the ashes.

I will post some ideas that may be possible within the next couple of days. My son just had major surgery and when he's sleeping, I can be on the computer. (My family and I have shifts.) Right now I gotta run. It's my sleep time (middle of the day) and will be for awhile.

Thanks for reading!

The Hole in the Heart Review

Review

Episode 6x22 – The Hole in the Heart

WARNING: This is long, but the sections are labeled so you can skip over things if you’d like.

There was so much going on in this episode that I’m intimidated at writing a review but at the same time can’t help myself to attempt it. My hubby thinks I’m crazy… crazy in a good way, though. LOL! So far, I’ve watched it three times and I’ve spent quite a bit of time reading other viewers’ perspectives to see if I want to revise any of my opinions, or more likely, strengthening my own. I haven’t even touched the tip of the ice berg. There are so many people talking online about this episode because it was so well done. I like it better the more I watch and read. I’m really hung up on which episode is my favorite of the season: last week’s Signs in the Silence or this week’s The Hole in the Heart.

Jake Broadsky/The Case

I have really enjoyed this arc. He’s been the perfect foe for Booth. I didn’t really understand the opening scene but understand how it drove the episode’s plot… Matt L. was playing for the wrong side just by defying Jake. The part that didn’t make sense: Why did he need to borrow his rifle? Didn’t get it. I like how Booth openly worked with Sweets on this case. His insight was spot on: He’s finding people who he believed deserved to die and found people to pay him for it. He figured out that after he took out Booth, he would be coming for the rest of Booth’s team. He professionally disagreed that Booth shouldn’t have shot him in the back but personally he didn’t really have a problem with the idea. Sweets tied it all up for me in a way that made all the sniper episodes make sense to me.

I was surprised at first that Broadsky was after Booth because he was interfering with his missions. What a sick guy… he thought it was self-defense? Right. And then he managed to twist his theory that self-defense required an aggressive offense. My guess is that he always had the tendency to go down this road in life when he was in the army and believed he was the left hand of God. The army unknowingly taught him the skills he needed to become a deadly force on the wrong side of justice. That’s my opinion anyway.

I love at the end that Broadsky was so surprised by Booth knowing his hand was broken. I love it when Brennan’s findings help Booth with a fight! I loved the whole hunt. Booth successfully getting the bad guy is hot! LOL Can’t help it. Love it! But I also loved how Hodgins was able to help Brennan interpret things for Booth. Booth’s “You may have just saved my life,” was probably my favorite part of that scene.

Does anyone know why Broadsky wanted to be in the shipping yard?

Agent Genny Shaw

I really liked her character which surprised me. When I heard she would be part of the plot, I immaturely was unhappy. I blame it on the Hannah arc. I think I can handle almost anything that happens on the show except for anymore SOs and just the thought of another female coming into Booth’s life made my cringe. But I was happy with Genny’s character. Booth acted as a nice mentor for her and seeing him as being needed probably allowed him to accept a partner. (Before Brennan, he was determined to work alone.) I’m also thinking that his experience of teaching other soldiers in Afghanistan had prepared him for such a role.

I’ve been reading about fans wanting to see a relationship between Genny and Sweets or Genny and Wendell. I don’t see how a ship with Sweets would work since they both work for the FBI. Then again, it would be fun to see them fight their feelings and Sweets realize what B&B were going through.

Angela & Brennan

Finally! I was starting to wonder if they were even friends anymore.

So… about that conversation between them: I personally think it’s possible that B&B did make love. Why?

Of course, the smile was just so unBrennan-like. If they just talked, Brennan would have been upfront and literal about it. But making love and letting go the last of her imperviousness? That is not something that Brennan would be comfortable talking about. She wouldn’t have come right out and said they had sex because that’s not what it would have been.

Second, she started the conversation with sharing that she got into bed with Booth. Brennan for years has insisted that they were just friends. Again, if they just comforted and talked, she would have said so right from the start. And we can tell she didn’t say it literally because Angela was speechless and Brennan asked if she was going to say anything about it. After all, Brennan was probably expecting her to squeal. Brennan left it open for interpretation.

And then, she doesn’t stop Angela from asking for more details. She doesn’t look for a way out of the conversation and Jack coming in would have been the perfect timing. Instead, she allowed Angela to shoo him out!

And tacking on a few other facts about bedroom scene makes it more to me… after seeing Brennan with Angela. At first, I didn’t think anything more happened.

One more thing about this before I continue with B&B… A FanFic reader requested that I write a continuation of The Hole in the Heart for my series of one-shots called, Now that’s more like it! I’ll be continuing the scene of Angela & Brennan since I already wrote a bedroom scene titled Signs of New Life which was based on promos. And I didn’t want to extend the ending because I believe the finale is like a part 2 of this episode.

Booth’s Apartment/Did they or didn’t they?

I love the fact that Booth told Bones that she was staying at his apartment and she didn’t argue. I love her logic for sleeping on the couch and Booth’s chuckled response followed by a cute and sincere thank you. LOL I love the fan ficky part of Booth giving him his clothes to Brennan to wear and her going to Booth in his bedroom for comfort.

It’s 4:47 when Brennan walks into Booth’s room scaring the crap out of him. (Did she bother knocking first?) What if he would have been doing… you know… THAT. Oh, right. I guess that would be fan ficky, too. LOL!) And I wish someone would tell me why he asked if he should put down the gun and why he was grumpy with her at first. (Sigh)

Anyone else snicker at the socks he wore to bed? LOL I’ve always imagined (yes, imagined) that he would be a guy who slept in his boxers. Geesh! We got to see him in his boxers before and one of those times was in his bedroom with the PBD. I really hope we get some PDA with Bones, soon. Seriously, we deserve it after what we’ve been through this season. Did anyone else think Fox should sell t-shirts that say, “I survived Hannah.” I mean, have you seen the House, MD t-shirts and other garbage? (My hubby has a cane just like his… I kid you not. I cringe.)

I was happy when Booth’s expression softened when Brennan started slipping a few tears because she wondered what kind of person she was. He said something like: “No… Come here. No, no, no. Bones, you got that all wrong.” And he offers his hand for her to sit next to him. I was so happy to see that. She coming to him AND he’s offering. Give and take the way a relationship should be. It’s not all one-sided anymore. What a relief! They have both come so far. They were so in tune with each others needs in this episode. Brennan with consoling him at the lab and he was consoling her in the bedroom. Loved it. Loved how he easily used her language of the universe and she saying the very normal… If there was a God, he would have let Vincent stay. Booth: “It doesn’t work that way.” And she accepts it. So good. And she asked for comfort. So, so good!

Now, as I said, I personally think they made love (or at least displayed some sort of physical affection.) But if I’m wrong, I’m fine with it. The important part was they are now in the same place and they are in or ready for a relationship. And if it did happen, I’m fine that we didn’t see anything because it was out of comfort and private. Almost too special to see. Does that make sense? But… I did want to hear it talked about with Angela and Brennan and especially between B&B. I’m still holding out hope that if they did in fact make love that we know before the finale is done. I will be upset if we’re left hanging all summer not knowing. And I want some sort of PDA… like a passionate kiss. What I don’t want is for Brennan to be pregnant. But if she is, I’ll roll with it. Nothing could be as bad as Hannah. (Seriously, I cringed when I watched an episode of House that she appeared in. As wrong as it is, I’ll never be able to watch anything that she stars or guest stars in… and that includes anymore Bones episodes. I just can’t go there.

Okay, one last thing about the bedroom: I loved how he comforted her, holding her tightly and rubbing her back. The words he spoke were soft and comforting. “That’s what I’m here for. I’m right here. I know. It’s hard.” I wasn’t expecting him to add “baby” like he used in the season 5 premier, but I would have squealed if he did.

Booth

He’s back! He became the take charge leader of the squints in their time of need. And he needed to be needed. That’s Booth. Booth with a gun and hunting a foe… hot!

I think that Booth has lost the last of his anger. He’s watched Bones lose the last of her imperviousness. He’s learned that her reaction to his desire to be in an intimate relationship with her in the 100th episode wasn’t about him. It was about her. She wasn’t ready to be what he needed because she still had those walls up. And all this means that there wasn’t anything wrong with him… which is what I think Bones wanted to tell him in Dare Devil in the Mold at Founding Father’s. Booth had to figure it out for himself. He had to know and believe that there wasn’t anything wrong with him because 3 women had turned away from him. Not having to question his worth means he doesn’t have to be angry anymore.

I love how he acknowledged Vincent as a friend to Genny. He wasn’t embarrassed to be a friend of a squint (that wasn’t Bones, of course.) And although he called Vincent the “English Squintern,” he knew his first name! I love how hard he fought to save him at the end. I love how Booth could laugh at Mr. Nigel-Murray’s antics with the dinosaur skeleton instead of smirk and mock.

What happened to Booth’s access card to the platform? Did anyone else notice that the guard had to swipe him so he could gain access?

Brennan

Nigel-Murray last scene: I love how open she was. She was willing to lie about it being good that he couldn’t feel anything. Her heart was open to say they (she) loved having him there. It doesn’t look like he got to hear her say that he was her favorite. I don’t know if it was true, but the fact that she said it was true. I hope she doesn’t continue to say that she doesn’t have an open heart.

Brennan to Booth: “You still have blood on your hands.” I’m glad that Brennan is still Brennan at the core and that Angela was able to say that she was being literal.

Ending Scene

I loved that they sang The Lime in the Coconut in tribute to Vincent and that Brennan knew Vincent’s favorite song.

I love Brennan’s potted plant… and how Angela defended her and the look of affection Booth gave her and she retuned.

I love the Sweets saluted Vincent as he was driven away.

And I love the smile Booth had when Bones linked arms with him! If something did happen physically between them, then that gesture would have meant that she still needed him and it wasn’t from a moment of weakness… and it would mean that Booth didn’t take advantage of her emotional state.

Miscellaneous

Loved how Cam dealt with Hodgins when he was all up in arms about being told to leave.

I love that the six main characters are a family again… or at least getting there.

Love the looks Booth gave Brennan before he went to bed and again in the ending scene.

Loved the camera shot from Booth’s perspective of his bedroom door closing while watching Bones.

I love how the gang was waiting to find out if Booth got Broadsky and if Booth was alright.

The montage scene was awesome! Loved the music with it, too.

I think Sweets handled Brennan well when she and Mr. Nigel-Murray were so excited. He probably remembered that same thing happening between Brennan and Daisy.

Hodgins liked Vincent’s facts and Cam liked his confessions. She said if those were the worst things he ever did… yeah. That’s sad.

Mr. Nigel-Murray

He was so cute with the dinosaur replica! He apparently liked Booth. It was cute how he acted like a kid calling to his mom or dad to watch him in his dinosaur bones. LOL! I loved how he and Hodgins arm wrestled.

His acting was fabulous and heart-crushing. His pleas to stay seemed like it was two-fold; it was like he was saying good-bye on the show and to his fans. I will miss him and his facts.

In Memory of Mr. Nigel-Murray, a Give Me My Remote writer suggested people leave random facts. I enjoyed reading them. Here are a few of my favorites:

A while back, Ryan Cartwright tweeted a link to a list of common misconceptions. I thought this was very Mr. Nigel Murray of him. I still had the link in my email, as I had shared it with some friends. I think it’s only fitting that I share it here as well.

Give Me My Remote Interview with Emily Deschenal

In what is probably one of the worst kept secrets around, Booth and Brennan will end up in bed together in tonight’s brand new episode of BONES. Of course, why they end up there and whether they are platonic bedmates remains to be seen.

When I caught up with series star Emily Deschanel (Brennan) before the Paley Center panel honoring her show, she told me she hadn’t seen those incriminating promos. However, she did tease that what we think goes down might not actually be the case…

Bones Finale Cliffhanger Is a "Big Emotional Drop"

We made sure that when the gang came down the carpet at the Paley Center Presents: An Evening with Bones, we stopped them so we could get info on the season six finale. "[There's] a little bit of a cliffhanger—a big emotional drop," David tells us. Hart echoes his actor's take on the cliffhanger by saying: "There's a reason to tune in for season seven."

In this video clip, you will see David hold Emily's stomach and Emily kiss David. I love the part of the interview when Emily talks. Booth and Brennan will defintely be together at some point. And will Emily be pregnant on the show? It could go either way. What does that say???

Signs of New Life

"Agent Booth," addressed the hesitant Vincent Nigel-Murray. "Before Angela checked the phone found at the crime scene, I was curious about if it could have been used as an alternative device."

That got Booth's attention right away. He looked up from the text he was messaging to see Nigel-Murray carefully holding out the phone to him. "Why didn't I know about this sooner?" he asked, clearly agitated.

"It's already been through security. Now that Angela has what she needs from the phone, I would like to ask permission to take it apart."

Booth made a great squinting impersonation. "And you're the one asking me about this?"

Mr. Nigel-Murray produced a proud grin. "Dr. Brennan has been giving me quite a bit of trust." He quickly added, "Of course, I talked to her about it, first."

Booth relaxed but only a little. When had this kind of change taken place? This doesn't sound like Bones.

"There was a study done by Motorola that found one in ten cell phone subscribers have a second phone that often is kept secret from other family members. These phones may be used to engage in activities such as extramarital affairs or clandestine business dealings."

Booth smirked at the kid. It was the first fact he'd rattled off since he'd been in the lab and he was impressed that the kid seemed fairly under control of his emotions. "Did Angela find anything useful?"

"Not yet, but she just started."

"You're doing great, kid. Maybe you can get Hodgins to help you with that." Vincent winced at being called a kid.

"I'll have you know that I'm working on two doctorate's degrees and I've always been at the top of my class in my studies."

"I don't doubt that," Booth said amused as he started walking towards the doors of the lab. "But you're still a kid."

"Perhaps we should put you into the dinosaur contraption and I can challenge you to an arm-wrestling match," challenged Vincent.

He simply laughed and shook his head. "I'll be back later."

As Vincent started walking back to the platform, Brennan and Angela came walking out from Angela's office. "Where's Booth?" asked Brennan.

"He just left. He said he'd be back later. He gave permission to disassemble the phone."

"Damn," said Angela. "I've narrowed down the search from which cell phone towers were activated."

"Oh!" said Nigel-Murray. "He's going to want to know this right away. I can catch him if I hurry." He wasted no time in running out of the lab to catch up to Booth. Angela laughed at the sight of Vincent running. Brennan and Angela walked more slowly after him. They spotted them as they were approaching Booth's SUV.

Jacob Broadsky was an excellent marksman. He'd practiced for years without a spotter. He'd chosen his stake-out at the Jeffersonian parking structure because of its relatively low traffic volume. All he needed to do was to wait for the time when Booth would be without his partner. It looked like today was going to be his lucky day and he raised his rifle into position and focused on the black SUV.

"Agent Booth," yelled Mr. Nigel-Murray. Booth turned around just as he came to a dead stop at his side. After that, everything happened so quickly that Booth couldn't process what was happening. First he was thrown against his vehicle with tremendous force with a man pinned against him who immediately fell to the ground at his feet. His instincts told him to drop to the ground as well.

"Booth!" yelled Brennan. She began running away from Angela and the security guard standing at the door. Angela had both hands covering her mouth in horror.

Booth jerked his head around and yelled. "Bones! Drop to the ground! Now!"

Brennan did what she was told and yelled toward the security guard. "Call an ambulance! Someone's been shot!"

"Got it!" yelled the guard. "Mrs. Montenegro-Hodgins, you need to sit down."

Angela believed she should be helping but was frozen in place. If it wasn't for the chair the guard pushed towards her, she probably would've fainted and then she would have just been a burden. When she looked up, the guard was on the phone and carefully moving towards the victim. Booth had his gun pulled and was searching the area visually. Brennan was crawling towards Vincent.

Brennan sat on her knees and pulled off her lab coat.

"Bones!"

"He needs help, Booth."

Booth crept on his knees and knelt between her and the direction the bullet came from. "How is he?" he asked without turning around.

"Not good. Mr. Nigel-Murray," she said even though she knew it wouldn't do any good. He was unconscious. She used her lab coat to apply pressure to the wound caused by the bullet in his chest.

XOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOX

Broadsky put the rifle down and picked up his binoculars. "Damn it!" he muttered. "I'll get him next time. At least this wasn't a complete waste of time. Booth hates collateral damage." He picked up his things and left before the hunting began.

XOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOX

The guard approached cautiously and crouched down between vehicles. "Two ambulances are on the way."

"Two?" questioned Booth. "I'm just fine."

"Probably, but I'm worried about preterm labor."

"What?" asked Booth and Brennan in surprise.

Booth only momentarily looked behind him. "Bones? Maybe Chuck can take over for you and you can stay with Angela until help comes." Bones didn't move or say anything. "Bones?" He looked back again. "Are you okay?"

"I'm fine." She motioned for the guard to take over and showed him the proper way to compress the wound before she carefully made her way back to Angela.

The surgical waiting room at the hospital was quiet. Booth, Brennan, Cam, and Sweets were all in their own world of thoughts. They'd been waiting for two hours when Cam suggested that they should eat something, but everyone declined. Just then Hodgins walked in and everyone stood up and met him half way.

Cam spoke first. "How's Angela?"

Hodgins smiled and everyone sighed with relief. "We're having a boy."

Pats on the back and words of congratulations were given. "Wait!" Brennan talked over everyone. "She's delivering a month early?"

"No, no. Don't worry, Dr. B. Angie and baby are fine. We just got a scare over some mild pre-term contractions. They're going to keep her overnight for observation. With all that happened, we just wanted to know if we were having a boy or a girl. It's irrational really, but we feel more bonded to our baby now that we know if we're having a boy or a girl. She'll probably go home tomorrow possibly with medication. Paul would like to see her carry two more weeks, but he isn't too worried about gestational age."

"He's probably more worried about stress and high blood pressure," added Cam.

"Yeah, he did say that. So, I'm going to stay with her. From the looks on your faces when I came in, you haven't heard anything about Vincent."

Everyone shook their heads.

"Dr. B, Angela's asking to see you. I'll come if we hear anything about Vincent."

"Thanks Hodgins." Brennan felt a warm strong hand rest on her shoulder and Booth leaned in to whisper in her ear. The sensation felt strange but welcoming.

"Would you like for me to go with you?"

"It's not necessary, Booth." She instantly knew by the look on his face that she gave the wrong answer. So she quickly added, "But I'd like it if you came with me." She felt warm and had to reason with herself. "Angela's probably worried about you, too." He offered his arm and she held on tight and leaned in to him just as she had after she crushed Booth's heart as well as her own.

XOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOX

They quietly opened Angela's door which was cracked open.

"She's asleep, Booth," Brennan whispered.

Angela's eyes popped open. "Sweetie, I heard that loud and clear." Booth chuckled.

"I'm sorry, Ange."

"Don't be. I wasn't sleeping yet and these drugs they have me on will give me more than enough sleep tonight."

Brennan hadn't been inside a hospital since Booth had his tumor removed and she didn't like the feeling. Booth could feel her shudder against him since she was still holding onto his arm, something that didn't go unnoticed by Angela.

"Are you cold?" asked Booth.

"Cold?" She looked confused. "No, why would you think so?"

"You shivered."

Angela's mouth formed an O shape.

"What Angela?" asked Brennan.

"It's the memories, isn't it?" said Angela with confidence.

"That's irrational. Booth is perfectly healthy."

Booth looked at Brennan in surprise that quickly turned to affection. He'd always wondered why she left for Guatemala so quickly after his surgery but never got the courage to ask. With everything going on, he didn't think this was the time either so he changed the subject.

"So, we heard you're having a baby boy!" said Booth with a wide goofy grin. "If I can tear him away from Hodgins' bugs, I can teach him how to play hockey."

"Booth, Angela and Hodgins are having a baby. Isn't that what you told me?"

Booth laughed. "Yes, that's what I said."

"Do you think it's still appropriate to get the baby a stuffed animal?"

"Absolutely. Little boys love animals. It's not like he's going to take it to college with him."

Angela giggled at the two of them. It was so good to see them getting back to normal. But then she sobered quickly as Hodgins walked into the room with a distraught look on his face. "Oh, God!" squealed Angela in horror once again as she covered her mouth in shock.

He ran over to his wife. "Angie, you've got to relax."

"How am I supposed to relax, Jack? Honestly, is that possible?" She was yelling but she couldn't stop herself and then the tears came.

Brennan tried to put her tears on hold. She grabbed one of Angela's hands. "Ange. Please. It's not good for the baby."

"It's not right," she cried. "He was so young with so much potential. It's not right."

When Brennan's own tears started pooling, she uncharacteristically hugged Angela in an attempt too hide the tears. Booth, fighting tears of his own, walked up next to Brennan and started to rub her back.

A nurse walked in a short time later and was instantly concerned. After getting the story, she suggested that she not take anymore visitors, with the exception of Hodgins, and said that she would ask the doctor about a mild sedative.

"I guess we should go, Bones."

"Wait," said Angela. "Are you safe? Is Bren safe?"

"I think the bullet was meant for me," admitted Booth. "We already have agents assigned to protect us."

Brennan knew that but to hear it confirmed made her feel queasy.

"I'd feel so much better Bren if you stayed with Booth."

"So would I," Booth declared. He'd been trying to figure out a way to ask Brennan to stay with him and would have to privately thank Angela later for making it easier for him.

"Are you sure it's necessary, Booth? You just said that we have agents protecting us."

"I know Bones, but I'm not just thinking about our personal safety. We've both been through a traumatic event. One of our squints died. I, personally, would rather not be alone tonight."

"Oh." Brennan hadn't expected to hear that. But then, he'd been full of surprises lately. "I… I think that maybe it would be good for both of us to feel more comfortable so we can get some sleep."

"Sleep is essential, Bones."

They said their good-byes and he put his arm around her shoulders and led her out of the room.

Booth was surprised when Brennan didn't argue with him after leaving the hospital. They ended up at his apartment because it was closer. He grabbed some clean sheets and a pillow for Parker's bed where Brennan would sleep. Then he went and got her some clothes to sleep in. He handed his clothes to her feeling a bit awkward as she stood in front of him hugging a pillow to her stomach.

"My t-shirt and sleep pants will be big, but at least the pants have a drawstring."

"Thanks, Booth," she said softly.

"Are you okay? Do you need anything before I go to bed?"

"I'm exhausted. I just want to sleep and forget."

Booth nodded sadly in understanding.

XOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOX

Booth couldn't sleep. The events of the day kept rolling through his mind. And when he closed his eyes, they were even more vivid. An innocent person died because of him. He wasn't just anyone; he was a squint… one of Brennan's squints. He thought about going for a run but quickly dismissed the idea because Brennan was with him. He didn't think he'd convince the agents outside to let him leave anyway. He couldn't just sit still, though. So he ended up pacing his small bedroom. Just when he thought he would get dizzy, he heard a soft whimper. He stopped and wondered if he'd imagined it. But a few moments later he heard it again. Bones.

Booth knocked on Parker's bedroom door. Brennan opened it slightly.

"Bones? Are you okay?"

Instead of answering the question, she asked, "Why aren't you sleeping?"

"I can't sleep. Every time I close my eyes, the images I picture from the day get more vivid and real looking. You can't sleep either?" She simply shook her head. "Thinking about Angela and Mr. Nigel-Murray?"

She shook her head again. "I mean, yes, but that's not what I'm imagining when I close my eyes," she whispered.

"I could use some company. Do you want to talk?"

Brennan wasn't sure she could talk about what was bothering her, but if Booth needed her, she would do anything for him.

"Come on," he said gently. Without even thinking about it, Booth led her to his bedroom and they sat on the edge of the bed. He turned to face her and grabbed a hand to hold in both of his. They'd been touching in small ways for a few hours, but the touch felt foreign and it bothered him. Touching Brennan used to be as natural as walking.

"Can you tell me about it?"

She stared at her hand in his, unsure of how to begin and hoping he wouldn't be upset with her. "I keep remembering the time you were shot in the Checker Box when I was singing. And you were just lying there staring up at me. Your eyes were unfocused and you were leaving me. I kept telling you that you would be okay. I wanted you to fight it. But nothing would be the same again. I knew it before a doctor told me you were dead."

Booth gently tipped her chin with a finger to look him in the eye. "Hey, I'm right here."

"It could have been you, Booth. I don't think I could go through that again."

"But I didn't go anywhere. I'm right here."

"But I thought you died. For two weeks, Booth! I thought I'd never again see your eyes look at me or hear you call me "Bones."

"That was three years ago, Bones. I said I was sorry. And I thought you were okay. You said you were okay. You compartmentalized everything."

"You actually believed that?"

Now Booth looked as confused as he was upset. "What are you saying?"

"I can't lose you, Booth. As much as I tried to prevent it, everything in my life revolves around you. I used to think I could run away, like I did to the Maluku Islands. But I was wrong. You weren't there physically. But you were still here." She pointed to her head.

Booth wanted to remind her that love wasn't just about the brain, it was also about the heart. But he didn't. They weren't ready. "I'm right here and I'm not going anywhere."

"You can't promise that, Booth. And you can't see into the future."

"You're right. I can't. But I know how I feel. And I know how I think. And I'm using my brain and my heart to do everything I can to be here for us."

She looked at him curiously. She expected him to say, 'be here for you.'

"And Bones, as sad as I am that your grad student lost his life today on the account of me, it scares me to think what would have happened to me if it'd been you running to catch up to me instead of him. I don't think I could go on."

"You would. You have Parker."

"Don't pretend you don't know how important you are to me. I need you, Bones. I always do. Especially now. I can't help but feel responsible for Vincent's death."

"That is not your fault."

"I know you think it's irrational, but that's how I feel. And you weren't responsible for me getting shot by Pam Noonan."

She was about to protest but instead reached out and touched the place on his chest that she remembered the bullet wound being.

"Let's get some sleep," Booth said in a husky voice.

"Is it okay if I stay here?" she asked in the softest whisper he'd heard from her. His answer came as he gathered her in his embrace and fell back onto the pillows. She laid her head between his shoulder and chest and rested her hand over his heart. After pulling up the covers, Booth wiped the tears from her cheeks, kissed her nose, and combed his fingers through her hair until he knew she was asleep.

XOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOX

When Booth woke up, he was surprised at first by not being able to roll over. He opened his eyes and remembered why he was holding his beautiful partner in his arms. The clock on the bedside table read three o'clock. As he watched her, he absently rubbed her back. When her eyelids fluttered open, his hands stilled.

"Sorry. I didn't mean to wake you."

"It's okay. I feel strangely rested. What time is it? Did you sleep?"

"It's just a little past three. We both slept a few hours. Thank you for that." He kissed her on the cheek.

"What are you thanking me for? I didn't do anything."

He chuckled softly. "Yes, you did. By just being here, I was able to relax. And I was able to sleep. So, thank you." He watched her reaction in her eyes. Eventually he broke eye contact when he bent over and brushed a soft kiss on her lips. He looked back up at her eyes and didn't see fear. He kissed her again but with more intention and meaning and he felt a shiver when she sighed. He laid his head back down on the pillow and made a sigh of his own.

"Booth?"

"Yeah?"

"Is it okay to feel happy and secure when we just lost a friend?"

Booth's heart warmed at hearing Brennan referring to her student as a friend. He used to wonder if she'd ever allow herself those kind of feelings again after losing Zack the way she did.

"There's nothing wrong in taking comfort from someone close to you when something bad happens in our lives. Actually, I think it's quite natural. What do your anthropological studies say about other cultures in similar situations?"

She leaned up on her forearm to look at him and smiled. "Yes. You're right."

He smiled back. "That's it? No squinty speech?"

"Do you want one?"

"Only if you want to give one. I'll listen to you anytime."

She tilted her head to study his sincerity in the darkened room, lightened only by the streetlights outside his apartment building.

"Are we ready for this? Us?"

"What do you think?" he returned.

"I think you're the heart guy and I need you to know if you're ready. This is all new to me. I don't know how to be in a relationship. And I don't want to mess it up."

He propped himself up on an arm to be at eye level with her. "I don't want to mess it up, either. I'm scared to death I will."

"You can't actually kill yourself from fear."

He smiled. "You said that on purpose."

"I say everything on purpose."

He out right laughed. "Yes. You do. Even when you don't know all the meaning behind your words. This time, I'm grateful for you lightening the mood. Listen, Bones…."

She waited patiently for him to continue.

"I don't feel like I know how to be in a relationship, either. They have all failed. But…"

"But what?" she asked back starting to feel hopeful.

"But we're unique. We're unique in everything we do. And even though I still believe in fate…"

"And I still don't," she replied.

"Right. And even though I believe fate brought us into each other's lives, I think it's by the choices we make that will determine what we make of our relationship."

"You don't want it just to be about luck?" she asked, remembering what he had said about his relationship with his son the week before.

"Right. And we already have done all the hard stuff," he chuckled.

"Is there a list of things a couple has to do to be in a relationship?" she asked in amusement.

"Well, yeah. We already know just about everything there is to know about each other. And we still want to be together despite how difficult life can be sometimes. We were actually in a relationship for a long time. Sweets called it a surrogate relationship."

"Yeah. I can see that now. But things changed. Do you think it's too late?"

"God, I hope not. I know I'm not angry anymore, but I'm afraid of not being enough for you."

"Why would you even think that? I'm the one that needs to be worried about not being enough for you."

"That just crap."

"Excuse me?"

"It's crap, Bones. You think you don't have an open heart. Your heart is bigger and more open than any adult I know."

She didn't understand his qualifier of an adult, but she let him continue since she was dumbstruck with curiosity.

"I think it's fair to say that you haven't been in many relationships that were much more than sex. You don't have the same expectations and worries that can make things difficult in a new relationship. And you trust me so openly and honestly that it's scary. I'm not the standard. I'm flawed. I don't want to hurt you. I can't fail. If we do this… us… I can't go back. I need your help. I need you to want us as much as I do. We're a team."

"I'm not sure I understand everything you just said, but I know what's ours is ours. And I know we're the center and the center must hold."

"You understand more than you realize right now."

"So, it's not too late?" she asked with uncertainty.

"Being in a relationship doesn't mean we own each other, Bones. It means we're making a solid intellectual choice based on facts that we know about each other and with those facts we're deciding every day we want to be with each other… that's a committed relationship whether there's a piece of paper or not." Her grin grew the more he talked. He was speaking her language. "As awful as yesterday was, I think it has proven that we are still strong together. The only thing we don't have is the physical connection… making love."

"That's two things."

"Huh?" She looked at him so innocently that he couldn't read her. "Are you going to get all squinty on me after all? No squinty stuff in bed," he teased.

"Okay." She rolled over to get out of bed.

"Wait! I'm kidding." He reached for her and pulled her back to his side by wrapping an arm around her waist. "Talk to me, my favorite squint. How is making love two things we have yet to add to our relationship?"

"Making love isn't just about sex, Booth. You're the one who taught me that. It's two people trying to break the law of physics and become one because they love each other."

He was quiet.

"Say something. Did I get it wrong?"

"No, you got it right, Bones. Very right. Are you telling me that you love me? That there's more than just chemicals in the brain making you want to be here?"

The cutest shy smile appeared on her face before she looked at him with desire in her eyes. She leaned in for a beautiful kiss that she hoped said everything she had difficulty expressing verbally.

Booth felt like he was finally where he wanted and needed to be. A new life was about to open up for him, for them. If he could rely on his instincts, he would know for sure if Brennan loved him. He knew the road ahead would never be easy, but it would all be worth it. They had already made it through some very difficult times. He believed they could weather any storm as long as they were together.
